History of Kelagur Tea Estate

Over the course of four generations, the Mathias family has been intimately involved in the cultivation and processing of coffee and tea. The ownership of Kelagur Estate, which was acquired by S L Mathias (1868-1940) in 1927, has passed down through the family lineage. S L Mathias, who hailed from a family of coffee planters, took on the responsibility of managing the estate and carrying forward the family legacy.
Continuing the tradition, his son E J Mathias (1913-1992) dedicated five decades of his life to the development of the estate. During his tenure, he not only expanded the coffee and clonal tea plantations but also took significant strides in enhancing the welfare of the workers, demonstrating a genuine concern for their well-being.
In 1980, Peter Mathias joined the organization, marking the fourth generation to be actively involved. With determination and hard work, Peter Mathias, along with his dedicated team, brought about a remarkable transformation at Kelagur Estate. Through their efforts, the estate has earned a distinguished reputation as one of India's premier Tea and Coffee plantations. Presently, Kelagur Mathias Coffee and Tea Plantations encompass a vast expanse of a thousand acres, producing over 7,50,000 Kgs of top-quality finished products annually. An impressive feat, which reflects their commitment to excellence.
Notably, Kelagur Estate's success has not come at the expense of its employees. As the principal employer for more than 500 workers, the company adheres to a people-first approach, recognizing the value of its workforce and ensuring their welfare remains a top priority.
Recognitions and honors have followed Peter Mathias for his outstanding contributions to the industry. In 2013-14, he was elected as the President of the United Planters Association of Southern India (UPASI), a prestigious 120-year-old organization representing the states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.
The Coffee Board, reconstituted by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Government of India for a three-year term from Jan 2014 to Jan 2017, also acknowledged Peter Mathias' remarkable achievements.
