Mullayanagiri

Standing at 1,930 metres in the Chandra Drona Hill Ranges of the Western Ghats, Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka and one of the most loved weekend outings in South India. The climb is easy to moderate, suitable for beginners and families, and rewards visitors with 360-degree views over coffee estates, misty valleys, and — on the clearest days — a horizon that seems to fold the Nilgiris and the Himalayas into the same thought, which is how the peak earned its old nickname: the highest point between the two ranges.
Mullayanagiri sits about 20 km from Chikmagalur town, part of the wider Baba Budangiri range, and is barely a hop away from Astagiri Homestay — close enough that guests can catch sunrise at the summit and be back for a home-cooked breakfast.

Mullayanagiri is roughly 45 km (1.5–2 hours) from Astagiri Homestay, sitting right in the coffee plantations with the Western Ghats doing their misty thing most mornings. The food is home-cooked, the rooms are simple and comfortable, and the quiet here is the kind that actually gets to you in a good way. Solo trip, couple's outing, or a family weekend — it works either way, and you'll still make it up the hill in time for sunrise without the early-morning scramble from Chikmagalur town. The peak's name carries a story that most first-time visitors never hear. Local legend holds that a sage named Tapasvi Mullappa Swamy meditated for years inside a cave just below the summit. Over time, the hill came to be known after him — Mullayanagiri, the hill of Mullappa. A small temple at the top, also called Shri Guru Gadrige Mullappa Swami Mutta, stands in his memory.
Some old Kannada texts trace the name differently, linking the word Mullai to the dense forests that once covered these slopes. Either reading gives the peak a history that stretches back centuries, long before it became a checkbox on Karnataka trekking lists.

After the climb, visitors reach a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Saint Mullappa Swamy. The stone floor inside stays cool even at midday, and most people find themselves sitting a while just to take in the silence after the climb. Pooja is performed twice daily — once at opening and once before the temple closes in the evening — and the flags fluttering above the summit are usually the first thing you spot from the trail below.

Just beneath the temple lies an old cave where Saint Mullappa Swamy is believed to have meditated. Local legend puts the cave at close to 900 years old, and some accounts claim it once connected all the way to the Seethalayanagiri temple a few kilometres downhill. The entrance leading into the temple's inner sanctum is now sealed off by the priests, but the story is still one of the first things locals will tell you if you ask about the hill.

By Road: The most common route is via NH75 from Bangalore through Kunigal, Hassan, and Belur into Chikmagalur. The highway stretch is smooth, but the last few kilometres past Chikmagalur town turn narrow and curvy — worth taking slow.

By Bus: KSRTC buses run regularly from Bangalore, Mysore, and Mangalore to Chikmagalur. From the bus stand, a cab, jeep, or rented two-wheeler covers the rest of the way.

By Train: The nearest railway stations are Kadur (~40 km) and Birur Junction (~40 km). Chikmagalur also has a small station with limited connectivity — a taxi or local bus covers the last stretch.

By Air: Mangalore International Airport (~170 km) is the closest; Kempegowda International Airport, Bangalore, is the alternative for those travelling from elsewhere in India.

From Astagiri Homestay: About 45 km, roughly 1.5–2 hours — close enough for an early start without an overnight elsewhere.

To manage crowds and reduce landslide risk on the slopes, the Chikmagalur tourism department has introduced a vehicle registration system for Mullayanagiri.

Only around 1,200 vehicles are allowed per day — book or arrive early.
Private vehicles stop at the designated parking area; beyond that point, visitors board the official jeep service.

Timings: 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with last entry before closing.
On weekends and public holidays, the daily vehicle limit fills up fast — reaching by 6 AM or picking a weekday visit avoids the wait.

September to February (best): Cool, clear weather with sharp visibility and a steady breeze — sunrise and sunset views are at their finest.
March to May: Warmer but still pleasant, with thinner crowds.
June to August (monsoon): The hills turn a dramatic, saturated green, but fog can block the view entirely and the path gets slippery — worth attempting only with proper footwear and caution.
For that postcard shot of clouds rolling below the summit, October to January is the sweet spot.

The trek is graded easy to moderate, manageable for beginners, families, and most fitness levels.
Vehicles (or the jeep service, once past the parking checkpoint) cover most of the elevation gain.
The final stretch is around 467 steps — a mix of paved steps and rockier sections near the top.
Round trip, including time at the summit, typically takes 2–3 hours.
Senior citizens can manage the jeep ride comfortably, though the final steps do need some stamina.
